Cleveland, Ohio---The No. 9 Owens Community College women's volleyball team got off to a shaky start, but prevailed with another straight set victory on the road over Cuyahoga Community College tonight to remain perfect in conference play.
Owens is now 10-3 overall and 3-0 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play with the 25-23, 25-8, 25-15 victory. They have won all nine sets in conference play heading into this weekend's big home matches against Cincinnati State (4-1 OCCAC) on Friday and Columbus State (1-1 OCCAC) on Saturday.
Tonight, though, the offensive duo of Erika Hartings (Coldwater/Coldwater, Ohio) and Taylor Purcell (Bedford/Temperance, Mich.) led the way with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Furthermore, Hartings hit .417, while Purcell hit a team-high .611.
Deanna Smith (Riverview/Riverview, Mich.) and Christine Tylutki (Monroe/Monroe, Mich.) had 24 and 13 assists, respectively. Ally Mikesell (St. Henry/St. Henry, Ohio) produced a team-high four aces, while the team had nine overall.
Brooke Gyori (Clay/Oregon, Ohio) led the way in digs with 10, while Reigelsperger (8), Tylutki (7), Mikesell (6), Hartings (5) and Smith (4) also chipped in.
Abigail Hesselschwardt (Otsego/Grand Rapids, Ohio) led the team in blocks with three (one solo), while also adding five kills and a .429 hitting percentage. Samantha Reer (St. Paul/Norwalk, Ohio) contributed, as well, with three digs.
Owens will be back in action on Friday at 6 p.m. in the SHAC with its big matchup against Cincinnati State. The Surge will be looking to attain a tie for first place in the standings with a win.
