Owens Moves One Step Closer to National Title with Tournament Win Against Jefferson

BROWNWOOD, Texas- The Owens Community College women's basketball team continues its run at the NJCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship after earning a strong victory over Jefferson Community College in round 1 of the national Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Brownwood Coliseum.

The Express leaned on steady execution and consistent play on both ends of the floor to move past Jefferson, keeping their momentum alive on the national stage. With a trip to the Final Four on the line, Owens delivered a composed performance that showcased their depth and balance throughout the lineup.

Owens finished the game shooting 35.9 percent from the field and controlled key moments through rebounding and defensive pressure. The Express also forced turnovers and capitalized on second-chance opportunities, helping them maintain control throughout the contest.

Sophomore guard Liv Mullins led Owens offensively with 22 points, shooting 8-for-11 from the field and converting 6-of-8 free throws. Da'Cariya Lanier added 14 points while contributing across the stat sheet with six rebounds and five assists.

In the paint, Sakiya Turner made a major impact with a double-double performance, recording 10 points and pulling down 13 rebounds to anchor the Express' rebounding effort. Emily Baer also contributed on both ends with 11 points, five assists, and strong defensive pressure.

Head coach Stephen Perry credited the team's effort and composure in the win.

"We're really excited to be moving on to the next round. It was a great game tonight. Both teams played really hard, and we were able to make a few more plays down the stretch to secure the win. We're going to get some rest and watch film tonight to get ready for Anoka-Ramsey tomorrow."

With the win, the Express advance to the NJCAA Division III National Quarterfinals in Brownwood. Owens will face Anoka-Ramsey Community College on March 12 at 4:00 p.m. CT at Brownwood Coliseum, with a spot in the national championship game on the line.

The Express continues to build momentum as they chase a national title, carrying confidence and consistency into the tournament's final rounds.
