Columbus, Ohio---Five players scored in double figures as the No. 18 Owens Community College men's basketball team cruised to a 100-56 win over Columbus State Community College on the road today.
At the half, Austin Somerfield (Greenville/Greenville, Mich.) had a team-high nine points as Owens opened up a 45-27 lead. In the second half, they stretched the lead to as many as 44, which was the final margin.
Cameron White (Bowsher/Toledo, Ohio) had a team-high 17 points for Owens, including 13 in the second half. He finished 7-for-11 from the field and 3-for-4 from 3-point range. Pete Firlik (Catholic Central/Grand Rapids, Mich.) added 16 points on 2-for-5 shooting from 3-point range. John Murry (North Central/Indianapolis, Ind.) had 14, Somerfield had 11 and CJ Bussey (Central Catholic/Toledo, Ohio) had 11.
Darren Groves (Thurgood Marshall/Dayton, Ohio) added six points, but pulled down 15 rebounds. Somerfield (9), Dilyn Good (Springfield/Holland, Ohio) with seven and Murry (7) also contributed in the rebounding category. Shaakir Lindsey (Teaneck/Teaneck, NJ) had a team-high five assists, although Murry and Bussey each added four.
Owens blocked eight shots, including two each by Somerfield, Groves and Nate Harris (Central Catholic/Toledo, Ohio).
For Columbus State, Matthew Rhodes (14) and Jarel Woolridge (10) hit double figures.
Owens improves to 16-5 overall and 4-1 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play with the win, while Columbus State falls to 7-11 overall and 2-3 in OCCAC play.
Owens will be back in action on Wednesday at Lorain County Community College at 7:30 p.m.
