Heacock Leads No. 9 Express to District Championship

This week’s Student-Athlete Spotlight features sophomore guard Mackenzie Heacock.

Heacock helped her team defeat No. 19 Cincinnati State 69-65 and win their first district title in nearly 10 years on Saturday.

She had game-highs of 24 points and 10 rebounds in the title game.  In the first half, Heacock had six points and four rebounds, but things turned around in the second half where she scored 18 points and pulled down six rebounds (one offensive).

In Friday’s semifinal win over Sinclair Community College, Heacock had 19 points, four assists and three rebounds.

After Saturday’s game, Heacock was named the tournament’s MVP. She scored a total of 43 points in the two games.

Heacock averages 10.3 points and 3.5 rebounds per game this year.  She also has totals of 63 assists and 45 steals.

The No. 9 Express women’s basketball team opens up NJCAA D-II National Tournament action on March 19 at 9 a.m. against Community College of Rhode Island. You can keep up with all the latest news on the tournament by visiting OwensExpress.com.
