Toledo, OH---Ellie Comes, of Southview H.S. in Sylvania, Ohio, is on the verge of becoming the all-time digs leader for the No. 6 Owens Express volleyball team.
The sophomore has accumulated 1,725 digs in two seasons and is now 14 away from shattering the record of 1,738 held by Ashley Hill in 2003-04.
Additionally, Comes has led the Express to a 39-3 record overall and a 10-0 record in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC). Her team is currently on pace to have the fewest losses in a single season in the history of the Express volleyball program.
"Ellie is the backbone of our team," said Express head volleyball coach Sonny Lewis. "She has kept many balls in play to give our offense a chance to score. She's a great defensive player, always a hard worker and just a great girl."
Other stats totals for Comes this year include: 14 kills, 18 assists and 37 aces to go along with her 783 digs.
Last season, Comes accounted for 942 digs en route to being named First Team All-OCCAC, First Team All-Region XII, First Team All-Region XII Tournament team, and team Defensive MVP. Her other stats last year included 43 aces, 13 kills and 13 assists. She was also named an OCCAC Player of the Week last season, and she helped lead her team to an OCCAC title, a Region XII title, and an 11th place finish at the NJCAA Div. II National Tournament. The team finished 42-9 overall and and 11-1 in the OCCAC.
Comes has the opportunity to break the record in the final home match of the regular season for the Express this Wednesday against Sinclair Community College beginning at 6 p.m. in the SHAC. With a win, the Express can clinch at least a share of the OCCAC title.
