Toledo, Ohio---Jessica Kreger (Bedford/Temperance, Mich.) came off the bench to deliver the game-winning goal in overtime as the No. 8 Owens Community College women's soccer team defeated Lake Michigan College 2-1 in their home opener today.
Kreger took a pass from Jordyn Wright (Riverdale/Forest, Ohio) after Haley Malaczewski (Central Catholic/Toledo, Ohio) pushed the ball up and crossed it to score the second game-winning overtime goal in program history.
Owens had given up a late first half goal to Skylar Cooper at the 39:00 mark as Lake Michigan took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Owens offense awoke and peppered Lake Michigan with shots before Kendyl Christian (Clay/Oregon, Ohio) put one into the far right corner of the net to tie it up at the 60:33 mark.
With just seconds left in regulation, Christian put a header about a foot over the net that would have won the game.
No worries, however, as Kreger scored at the 91:43 mark of the game - just 1:43 into overtime to seal the deal for Owens.
Malaczewski got the assist on Christian's goal, while Wright got the assist on Kreger's goal.
Elise Ketelaar assisted for Lake Michigan on Cooper's goal.
Owens improves to 1-1-1 with today's win. They will host Muskegon Community College at 3 p.m. tomorrow.
All In The Family
There have only been two game winning goals in overtime in Owens women's soccer history and both are from the Kreger family. Prior to today's game winner, Jessica's sister Haley was the only player in program history to score an OT winner. Haley's game-winner came in last year's double overtime victory over No. 11 Schoolcraft College, who was undefeated and untied at the time.
