Owens Express Women’s Basketball Captures Region Xll Title in Statement Win

The Owens Community College women's basketball team delivered a statement performance in the NJCAA Division III Region XII Championship on Wednesday, Feb. 18, defeating Lorain County Community College 110–65.

From the opening tip, Owens controlled the tempo. The Express built a commanding 24-point lead in the first half, fueled by relentless defensive pressure and consistent rebounding. Even after playing on the road the night before, the team showed no signs of debility.

Freshman guard Sakiya Turner led the charge offensively, pouring in an impressive 32 points. Turner worked efficiently up and down the floor, capitalizing on transition opportunities and setting the tone early. As a team, Owens dominated statistically, finishing with 45 rebounds and an eye-catching 28 steals; numbers that reflect the team's defensive intensity and hustle.

Head Coach Stephen Perry expressed pride in the team's accomplishment and resilience.

"We're really excited about winning the NJCAA D-III Region XII Championship," Perry said. "I thought we played really well, especially after playing on the road the night before. The game posed a unique challenge for us as it was the third time we've played the same opponent in a total of nine days. It's really hard to beat a team twice in a season, but to beat a team three times in nine days is extra special."

With the regional title secured, Owens now shifts its focus to the Great Lakes District Tournament. The Express will host the championship game against Lorain County Community College for the 4th time on Friday, Feb. 27, at 6 p.m. The winner advances to the NJCAA DIII National Championship tournament in Brownwood, TX.

With their explosive offense, aggressive defense, and championship motivation, Owens appears poised for another strong showing. As postseason play continues, the Express are not just winning games; they are proving they belong on the national stage.
