Toledo, Ohio---Josie Monroe, a 5-10 catcher from Anthony Wayne High School in Whitehouse, Ohio, has signed a letter of intent to play softball at Owens Community College next year.
Monroe becomes the third student-athlete in the 2016-17 freshmen class. She joins Noel Gilley (RHP/1B) of Ashley Ridge High School in Summerville, S.C. and Courtney Cadle (SS) of Monroe High School in Monroe, Mich.
"Josie comes to us with an extraordinary bat," said Owens Community College head softball coach Marcus Smith. "She has extreme power and has a chance to break all the power stats at our school. She will be a force in our lineup, and we are very excited to have her on our team."
Monroe was a Second Team All-Northern Lakes League (NLL) and Honorable Mention All-District player as a junior under the tutelage of head coach Ron Meyers. As a sophomore, she hit .484 with a .533 on base percentage and a .785 slugging percentage after producing five home runs.
The Owens softball team, which captured Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) and Region XII championships last year en route to a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Tournament appearance, will open its 2016 season March 4-13 in Florida. They are scheduled to play 20 games during the trip.
