Toledo, OH---Express sophomore student-athletes Ashlyn Michalak (Springfield HS), Jordan Basinger (Kalida HS) and Darren Gessner (Napoleon HS) have been named OCCAC players of the week for various weeks. Despite the varying range of dates, the awards were just announced recently.
Michalak, a pitcher for the Express softball team, was named OCCAC player of the week for the week ending April 23.
In that week, Michalak went 2-0 with two complete game shutouts of Lakeland CC and Cuyahoga CC. Those two wins helped her team clinch the OCCAC championship outright. Overall this year, she is 16-1 with a 1.17 ERA and 169 strikeouts.
The No. 10 Express softball team (34-4) closes out their regular season schedule this week with three scheduled doubleheaders before opening postseason play the following week.
Basinger, a RHP for the Express baseball team, was named OCCAC player of the week for the week ending April 2. During that week, Basinger threw a one-hitter against Lakeland CC in a 5-1 win. He didn't allow any hits or walks until the seventh inning when a leadoff walk scored on a two-out double. He struck out nine batters in the game.
The Express baseball team has concluded their regular season and will open postseason play against Vincennes University at 12:30 p.m. in Cleveland, OH.
Gessner, of the Express golf team, was named OCCAC player of the week for week two of the OCCAC golf season. In the Columbus State Invitational, Gessner led all golfers with a 77, and he was one of only two players in the 70s. Gessner's effort helped the Express win the invitational by 10 shots.
The Express golf team is currently in second place in the OCCAC with one invitational left before the OCCAC championships.
Congratulations to these student-athletes on their accomplishments.
