Toledo, OH -- Unlike Wednesday night's game againt Schoolcraft, it did not take the Owens long to jump out to a big lead against Lorain. The Express led 25-16 at the end of the first period, and that was the closest the Commodores would come. Owens would outscore Lorain 93-37 over the final three periods for a stunning 65 point win at 118-53.
Owens would use a heavy dose of pressure to force 18 Lorain turnovers over the course of the game and a steady inside-outside attack offensively to pull away from the Commodores. The Express would shoot 56% (49-88) from the floor for the game including 50% (9-18) from three. But the real story was the dominance inside the paint for Owens. The Express scored 68 points in the paint to just 12 for Lorain over the course of the game.
Kaylah Ivey scored 28 points, a career high, on 13-21 shooting from the floor. Constantly double teamed on the low block, Ivey continued to find ways to put the ball in the basket from close range. Da'Vina Shelton had 20 points on the evening as well. The freshman shot 8-20 from the floor on the night. She is averaging 17.5 points per game through her first two JUCO games. The Express shared the ball extremely well too. They had 27 assists over the course of the game.
The win continues the Express's dominance over Lorain. Over the last three seasons, Owens has defeated the Commodores by an average of 76 points. They have outscored Lorain 572-194 during that stretch as well.
Owens improved to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in OCCAC play. They will be in action again this Sunday afternoon at the SHAC at 1:00 PM when they take on Monroe Community College.
