Toledo, OH -- In Wednesday's home opener, the visitors from Schoolcraft jumped out to an early 11-1 lead on the Owens Men, and they would hold the lead the rest of the game en route to a 97-86 victory. The #5 Ocelots took advantage of several Express turnovers to jump out to their early lead.

Despite the large deficit early on, the Express would fight back to make the game a contest though. Behind the performances of freshman Dru Pettigrew and sophomore Gabe Simpson, Owens would claw their way back to within single digits in the late stages of the second half. The Ocelots lead by as much as 22 points, but the Express had their deficit trimmed to just eight points with a little over three minutes to play in the ballgame.

Pettigrew was instrumental in the comeback, draining five three point field goals in the contest, three of which came in the second half. When the Express needed a bucket, the freshman was happy to oblige. The Rogers High School product would finish with 22 points on 8-11 shooting from the field. Gabe Simpson added 21 points of his on 8-14 shooting. The sophomore was the main offensive catalyst in the first half, shooting 4-6 in the first 20 minutes of the ballgame.

Unfortunately the Ocelots had too much offensive firepower. Walt Kelser scored 35 points for the visitors from Schoolcraft. Demetrius Lake also added 25 for Schoolcraft.

Owens fell to 2-1 on the season, but the team will be back in action at the SHAC again on Thursday night at 7:00 PM when they host Lorian Community College.
